Psychological treatments

Gastrointestinal symptoms can have a major impact on quality of life and emotional wellbeing. Gastroparesis is linked to increased anxiety and depression. This can be related to the symptoms of gastroparesis, the side effects of medications, or other life events. A counselor or psychologist who is familiar with gastroparesis can be a very beneficial addition to your treatment team, helping you to build strategies for coping with chronic symptoms. There are many approaches that a psychologist may use to assist you in gaining some control over your condition, including relaxation techniques, hypnosis, biofeedback, and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
