Gastric emptying scintigraphy

This test is the gold standard measure of how quickly your stomach empties after a meal. You will be given a small meal to ingest, which contains a slightly radioactive substance called a radioisotope. The radioisotope is not harmful, and allows the radiologist to see how quickly the meal empties from your stomach using a scanning machine. The scans are generally performed at hourly intervals for up to four hours, and gastroparesis will be diagnosed if more than 10% of the meal is still in your stomach four hours after eating.
