Breath testing

After eating a solid meal with a non-radioactive isotope, breath samples can be collected to measure gastric emptying rate. As the meal is ingested and absorbed in the small intestine, the isotope is metabolised and expelled from the lungs. The amount of isotope in the breath allows your physician to calculate how quickly your stomach is emptying.
